Counting methods

An app is only as good as the way you use it. These explainers cover the method of counting itself: what to count, how to count it, and where totals usually go wrong. They apply whatever calorie counter you choose.

Why method matters

Two people can use the same calorie counter and get very different value from it. One logs every meal within minutes, weighs the oil, checks the serving size and reads the weekly average; the other logs breakfast and lunch, guesses dinner and reads the daily total. The first learns what is really going on. The second gets a number that is mostly fiction. Most of the difference is method, not software.

None of these explainers recommend an app. For that, see the 2027 report. For quick calorie values, see the calorie charts.
